About Business Cards

Business cards have their roots in the 17th century Europe where they were used to announce the impending arrival of aristocratic people. The cards became very popular and by the 19th century everyone wanted them. Today business cards may not announce impending guests but they do still play a very important role in communicating something about us. They are shared during formal introductions as a convenience and a memory aid. Handing a business card to a new business acquaintance is a more formal way to introduce yourself to a prospective employer or customer. Without a business card it’s a little hard to be viewed with the same level of credibility.

Cards should have the name of the card holder, their title, the company, their location, website and relevant contact information such as address, email, telephone and anything else you feel the need to add.

Business Card Sizes

Many people like to try to stand out from the crowd by designing their business card with odd shapes and or odd sizes. The standard size for a business card in the US is 3.5” x 2” and 3.35” x 2.17” in the UK. Typically business cards are printing on a heavy card stock such as 12pt or even 14pt paper. More and more business cards are being printed digitally using CMYK, four color process printing. You have the option of print 4/0 (printing 4 colors on one side) or 4/4 (printing 4 colors on both sides) when requesting full color business cards. You also have the option of adding a UV coating be put on both sides of your business cards to protect them from scratches and dirt. Other options include corner rounding, die cutting, foil stamping and embossing.
